Business was booming, and one could find all kinds ofGaoting Mountain’s natural tributes, silkworm cocoons, medicinal materials, linens, tea, waxberries, etc. There were also people of all occupations, togetherthey made the port a rather lively place. After the Yuan and the Ming Dynasty, the Grand Canal led to Tangqi from Hangzhou, but Shangtang River was still animportant channel from Hangzhou to Xia River through Chang-An. According to the Records of Hangzhou, the area fromShangtang River to Chang-An was ‘whereall merchants and ships converge, a busy place by day and by night, and onecould find all kinds of commodities there.’ Both shores of the ShangtangRiver was prosperous in commerce.
